हिन्दी अनुवाद―मैं रोहना जाने के लिए अपनी ट्रेन के कम्पार्टमेन्ट/बोगी
में बैठ चुका था कि तभी एक लड़की भी उसी बोगी में आयी। जो दंपति
उसे छोड़ने आये थे वे संभवतः उसके माता-पिता थे, जो उसके आराम को
लेकर चिन्तित/ बैचैन थे। उस औरत ने उस लड़की को अच्छी प्रकार से
समझाया/ निर्देश दिया कि कहाँ उसे सामान रखना है, कब खिड़की पर वह
झुक सकती है और कब नहीं और अजनबियों से कैसे बातें करने से बचना
चाहिए।

गाड़ी स्टेशन से खुल गयी। जैसी कि मेरी स्थिति उस समय थी, मैं पूर्णत:
अंधा था उस समय, मेरी आँखें सिर्फ प्रकाश और अंधकार के प्रति कुछ
संवदेनशील थी। यानी उनका कुछ पता चलता था। अतः मैं यह बता पाने में
असमर्थ था कि वह लड़की कैसी दिखती थी। लेकिन मुझे यह तो पता था
कि वह लड़की चप्पल पहने थी, जिसकी एड़ी (होल) के खटके की आवाज
मेरे कानों तक आती थी। मुझे उस लड़की की आवाज और उसकी चप्पलों
की भी आवाज पसन्द थी।
क्या तुम डेहरा तक जा रही हो? मैंने पूछा लगता है कि मैं किसी अंधेरे
कोने में बैठा था तभी तो वह लड़की मेरी आवाज सुनकर चकित हो गयी।
उसकी आवाज में चोख भरी थी–
'मुझे नहीं पता था कि यहाँ कोई और भी बैठा हुआ है।'
वैसे यह अक्सर होता है कि जिनकी आँखें सही सलामत होती हैं वे अपने
सामने की चीज को कभी-कभी बिल्कुल नहीं देख पाते हैं। उनको बहुत कुछ
देखना पड़ता होगा इसलिए ऐसा होता होगा, मैंने सोचा।
जबकि जो लोग बिल्कुल नहीं देख पाते या थोड़ा बहुत देख पाते हैं सिर्फ
जरूरी चीजों पर ही ध्यान दे पाते हैं।
मैं बोला-मैंने भी तुम्हें नहीं देखा, लेकिन तुम्हें यहाँ आते सुना।
मैं सोच रहा था कि क्या मैं उससे इस बात को छिपा पाऊंगा कि मैं
अंधा हूँ। पर, यदि मैं अपनी सीट पर ही बैठा रहा तो यह करना मुश्किल भी
नहीं होगा कि उसे पता न चले कि मैं अंधा हूँ।
लड़की ने कहा-मैं सहारनपुर जा रही हूँ। वहाँ मेरी चाची मुझे लेने
आयेगी।
लड़की ने पूछा-आप कहाँ जा रहे हैं ?
मैं बोला-डेहरा और उसके बाद मसूरी।
लड़की-ओह, आप कितने भाग्यवान हैं। काश । मैं भी मसूरी जा पाती।
मुझे पहाड़ बड़े अच्छे लगते हैं खासकर अक्टूबर के महीने में
मैं अपनी याददाश्त पर जोर डालते हुए बोला-हाँ, वह सबसे अच्छा समय
होता है। तब पहाड़ डहलिया के सुंदर फूलों से भरा रहता बेहद खूबसूरत
दिखता है। सूरज की धूप प्रिय लगती है और रात में आग सेंकने का आनन्द
भी आता है। अधिकतर यात्री तो वहाँ जा भी चुके और सड़के तो अब काफी
सूनी दिखती हैं। हाँ तुम सही कह रही हो, अक्टूबर हो सबसे सही समय है,
वहाँ जाने के लिए।

वह चुप रही। मैं आश्चर्य में सोच रहा था कि वह मेरी बात सुन भी रही
है कि कहीं वह मुझे प्रेमपूर्ण बातें करने वाला मूर्ख या सिरफिरा तो नहीं समझ
रही है। तभी मैंने एक गलती कर दी।
बाहर क्या दिख रहा है ? मैं पूछ बैठा। उसे मेरा प्रश्न बेहद सामान्य-सा
लगा।
क्या उसे पता चल गया था कि मैं देख नहीं सकता? लेकिन उसके
अगले प्रश्न ने मेरी शंका दूर कर दी।
वह बोली-तुम स्वयं क्यों नहीं बाहर का नजारा देख लेते हो?
मैं आराम से अपनी बर्थ (शय्या) से उठा और खिड़की के किनारे को
टटोला। खिड़की खुली थी, और मैने बाहर देखने का दिखावा किया कि जैसे
कि मैं बाहर के दृश्य को गौर से देख रहा हूँ।
मुझे ट्रेन के इंजन की आवाज, उसके पहियों को खड़खड़ाहट सुनाई दी
और मैं अपनी कल्पना में टेलिग्राफ पोस्ट्स (खंभों) को लगातार पीछे छूटते
जाते देख रहा था।

क्या तुमने ध्यान दिया कि हमलोग तो स्थिर बैठे हैं पर पेड़ हिलते-भागते
लग रहे है? मैं चहका।
वह बोली-ऐसा तो हमेशा होता है। क्या तुमने कोई जानवर देखा ?
नहीं-मैं विश्वास से बोला। मुझे पता था कि डेहरा में अब शायद ही कोई
जानवर बचा होगा।
मैं खिड़की से मुड़ा. लड़की की तरफ नजर डाली और दोनों कुछ देर
तक शान्त रहे।
"तुम्हारा चेहरा दिलचस्प है" मैंने कहा। मैंने थोड़ी हिम्मत की लेकिन यह
सही शब्द था। कुछ लड़कियाँ चापलूसी का विरोध कर सकती है। वह खुशी
से हँसी यह अच्छा है कि तुमने मेरे चेहरे को दिलचस्प कहा, वरना मैं तो लोगों
से सुंदर चेहरा सुन-सुन कर थक चुकी हूँ।
ओह तो आपके पास सुंदर चेहरा है। क्यों दिलचस्प चेहरे सुंदर नहीं होते
मैंने जोर दिया।
'तुम एक बहादुर इंसान हो' लेकिन इतने गंभीर क्यों हों? उसने कहा।
मैंने सोचा कि मैं उसकी बातों पर हसू लेकिन ये हँसी मुझे अकेलापन
और तकलीफ देगी इस ख्याल से मैं डर गया।
तुम्हारा स्टेशन नजदीक है, मैंने कहा। शुक्रिया भगवान ! यह एक छोटी
यात्रा थी, मैं ट्रेन में दो-तीन घंटे से ज्यादा नहीं बैठ सकती।
लेकिन मैं तो उसकी आवाज सुनने के लिए कितनी देर भी बैठ सकता
था। उसकी आवाज में पहाड़ की धारा/झरना की खनक थी। जैसे ही वह ट्रेन
से उतरेगी वह हमारी मुलाकात को भूल जायेगी। लेकिन यह याद मेरे साथ
मेरे पूरे जीवन भर रहेगी।

इंजन की सीटी बजी, ट्रेन ने अपनी आवाज और धुन बदली. लड़की उठी
और अपना सामान उठाने लगी। मैं सोच रहा था कि उसने जूड़ा किया था
या चोटी। या फिर उसके बाल कंधे पर झूल रहे थे या उसके बाल छोटे
थे?
ट्रेन स्टेशन पर धीमी हो गयी। बाहर सामान बेचने वालों की आवाज आ
रही थी और एक तेज आवाज वाली लड़की बोगी के बगल में खड़ी थी। वो
आवाज जरूर उसकी आंटी की होगी।
'अलविदा', लड़की ने कहा।
वह मेरे बहुत पास थी। वह इतनी करीब थी कि उसके बालों की सुगंध
आ रही थी। मैं उसके बाल छूना चाहता था लेकिन वह हट गयी। सिर्फ सुगंध
ही आ रही थी जहाँ वह खड़ी थी।
दरवाजे पर कुछ गड़बड़ी हो गयी। मैं एक आदमी से टकरा गया और
माफी माँगी। फिर दरवाजा बंद हो गया और दुनिया फिर बंद हो गयी। मैं अपनी
सीट पर बैठ गया। गार्ड ने सीटी बजाई और गाड़ी चल पड़ी। फिर से मुझे
एक नया यात्री मिल गया।
गाड़ी चल पड़ी। मैं खिड़की के पास बैठ गया और बाहर दिन की रौशनी
को घूरने लगा जो मेरे लिए अंधेरा था।
काफी चीजें बाहर हो रही थीं जिनका मैं सिर्फ अंदाजा लगा सकता था।
जो आदमी बाहर से आया था उसने मुझे जगाया और कहा तुम बहुत
दुखी होगे क्योंकि मैं उसके जितना आकर्षक नहीं हूँ जो साथ बैठी थी।
"वो काफी दिलचस्प थी" मैंने कहा। क्या आप मुझे बता सकते हैं कि
उसके बाल बड़े थे या छोटे ?
'मुझे याद नहीं', उसने अजीब सा जवाब दिया। उसकी आँखें जिसे मैंने देखा
बालों की तरफ ध्यान नहीं दिया। उसकी आखें काफी खूबसूरत थीं लेकिन उसके
कोई काम की नहीं। वो पूरी तरह अंधी थी। तुमने देखा, नहीं ?'
