Q. 1. Describe how Toto nearly boiled himself alive once.
Ans. Toto was always bent upon making mischiefs. He couldn't
rest from making mischiefs. Once a large kitchen kettle had been
left on the fire to boil for tea. Toto didn't find anything better to
do. So he lifted its lid. He got in the kettle finding the water warm
enough for a bath. This was just fine for a while, until the water
began to boil. Soon the water began to heat up to boil. Toto then
raised himself a little. But he sat down again finding it cold outside.
He continued jumping up and down for sometime. Soon the
narrator's grandmother arrived. She took him out of the kettle half-
boiled.
Q.2. Describe Toto's travels with grandfather secretly.
Ans. Grandfather got a big black canvas kit-big. He put Toto
into it. Toto couldn't take his hands out of this bag. It was too
strong for him to bite. Toto remained in the bag as far as Saharanpur.
Grandfather was coming out of the railway station. Toto grinned
at the ticket-collector at the gate. The ticket-collector was taken
aback. He told grandfather that he had a dog with him. So he
would have to pay Rs. three as fare for this 'dog'. In vain argued the
grandfather that Toto was not a dog. He had his pet tortoise with
him also. So he asked the ticket-collector how much he should
pay for it. The ticket-collector said that it was not a dog. So there
was no charge for that.
Q.3. What happened when Toto took a large dish of pullao
from the dining table?
Ans. One day Toto found a large dish of pullao standing in
the centre of the dining table. He was eating the pullao, The
grandmother screamed. Toto threw a plate at her. When one aunt
rushed forward. Toto threw a glass of water at her face. When
grandfather arrived. Toto picked up the dish of pullao and ran out
of the house. He threw the dish down from the tree to spite
Grandmother. It broke into a hundred pieces.

Q. 1. How does 'Toto come to grandfather's private zoo?
Ans. Toto was a baby monkey. He was very pretty. His eyes
shone brightly. His teeth were white like a pearl. He smiled in a
way that frightened the old Anglo-Indian Ladies. His fingers were
quick and wicked. His tail added to his beautiful appearance.
Grandfather liked him so much that he took Toto in his private
zoo.
Q.2. Why does Grandfather take Toto to Saharanpur and
how? Why does the ticket collector insist on calling Toto a dog?
Ans. The Grandfather was going to Saharanpur. He decided to
take Toto with him because Toto disturbed other animals of his
private zoo. A big black canvas kit bag was prepared for him. So
he couldnt escape from it. The ticket collector classified Toto as a
dog. The monkey was also a quadruped animal. He charged Rs. 3
as his Ticket.
Q. 3. Grand father finds Toto pretty. In what sense is Toto
pretty?
Ans. Grandfather bought Toto from a tonga driver for a sum of
five rupees. Seeing him out of place with the driver he brought it at
home. It was a pretty monkey. His bright eyes sparkled with
mischief beneath deep-set, eyebrows and his teeth. It often
displayed a smile and frightened elderly ladies. Its looks made it
all the more pretty.
Q. 4. How did Toto take a bath? Where did he learn to do
this?
Ans. Toto enjoyed warm water in winter evenings. Toto first
tested the temperature of the water with his hand. Then slowly he
put up his feet one day into the water thought until he was neck
deep in water. He would take a piece of soap and rubbed himself
all over the body. He had learnt this by imitating the author.
Q. 5. How did Toto almost boil himself alive?
Ans. Once a large kitchen kettle had been left to boil for tea.
Toto found water just warm enough to bathe. He got in the kettle.
The water began to boil. He raised himself a little, but finding it
clod outside, sat down again. He continued jumping up and down.
Soon the grandmother arrived and took him out.
Q.6. How did Toto get along with other animals?
Ans. Toto did not get along with other animals. He caused
trouble to Nana, the family donkey, greatly. He had fastened on to
her long ears with his sharp little teeth. Toto also teased other
animals.
Q.7. Why does the author say, 'Toto was not the sort of pet
we could keep for long'?
Ans. Toto was unmanagable. He broke dishes, tore clothes.
curtains and wallpapers. The author's family could not afford such
proquent losses. So they decided to sell Toto back to the same
tonga-driver.
Q. 8. What mischiefs did Toto make in the narrator's
bedroom?
Ans. Toto tore up the ornamental paper of the walls. He pulled
out the peg to which he was tied. He tore up the narrator's school
blazer into pieces. Surprisingly, the narrator's grandfather was
amused with these mischiefs.
Q. 9. Describe Toto's stay with Nana, the family donkey.
Ans. Toto was finally accepted by the narrator's grandmother.
He was put in the stable. Toto had fastened on to Nana's long ears
with his sharp teeth. Nana was pulling at her halter to keep her
head away from hay.
Q. 10. Describe Toto's appearance.
Ans. Toto was a pretty monkey. He had bright eyes under
deep-set eyebrows. He had white teeth like pearls. His hands looked
dried-up. He had a tail.
Q. 11. Describe how the narrator's grandfather took Toto
with him to Dehradun.
Ans. The narrator's grandfather got a big black canvas kit-
bag. When the bag was closed there was no escape. Toto could not
get his hands through the opening.
