हिन्दी अनुवाद―श्रीकृष्ण भोजनालय जैसा घटिया होटल हरि ने कहीं
नहीं देखा था। यहाँ तक कि उसके गाँव थूल में जो कैफे थे, वे भी उससे
कई गुना अच्छी हालत में थे। लेकिन इस श्रीकृष्ण भोजनालय की क्या बात
करें । यहाँ की दीवाल पर तो एक ढंग की रंगीन तस्वीर भी नहीं लगी थी।
हो सकता है कभी दीवार पर यहाँ कोई फोटो कभी लगी हो जो दीवार
पर जमी मैल और कालिख के नीचे गुम हो गयी हो। कमरे या हॉल जो कहें,
के छत की सीलिंग (अंदरूनी छत) पर मकड़े के जाले भरे पड़े थे, जिनमें
कालिख और मैल जम गयी थी जो कभी भी किसी ग्राहक के सिर पर काली
टोपी की तरह गिर पड़ती थी। पक्का और लकड़ी के टेबल भी काली मैल
के चकत्तों से भरे थे।
सारी रात और सारा दिन वहाँ चूल्हा जलता रहता । बड़े अल्मुनियम
के पैन में रोटी बनती रहती। यह संभवतः बंबई (मुंबई) का सबसे सस्ता
होटल था। यहाँ आने वाले ग्राहक अधिकतर कुली ओर भिखारी थे जो रास्ते
में पेट भरने आते थे।
भोजनालय का मालिक स्वयं भी सारा दिन कड़ी मेहनत करता- रोटियाँ
बनाता रहता उस बड़े खुले चूल्हें में जिसे दिन-रात जलाये रखा जाता था।
एक सुबह हरि नामक लड़का वहाँ आया और भोजनालय के मालिक
ने उसे जब चाय और रोटी खाने को दिया तो हरि बोला-मेरे पास पैसा नहीं
हैं, यहाँ काम मिलेगा। मालिक ने उसे काम पर रख लिया- रसोई में दो
लड़के पहले से हैं। एक और चलेगा। तुम जूठे बर्तन धोना और उन लड़कों
को रोटी के लिए आँटा गूंथने और रोटी बनाने में मदद करना । यहीं रह भी
सकते हो। खाना के अलावे और लड़कों की तरह तुम्हें भी एक रूपया रोज
मिलेगा।
अब हरि उस भोजनालय की रसोई का हिस्सा बन गया और काम में
जुट गया। दोनों लड़के जो पहले से वहाँ थे चुपचाप काम करते जा रहे थे।
जब उनमें से एक लड़का कुछ बोला तो हरि ने जाना कि वह तमिल भाषी
है। तमिल भाषा, जिसे वह नहीं जानता था।

वे लड़के न तो दोस्ताना दिखते थे न उसके बारे में कुछ जानने के
इच्छुक। वे आग को जलाए रखने में जुटे रहते, साथ-साथ एक लड़का
रोटियाँ बेलता तो दूसरा लड़का चिमटे की सहायता से आग पर रोटियाँ
सेंकता । हरि को उन रोटियों को ग्राहकों तक पहुँचाने का काम मिला । उस
जगह इतना ज्यादा काम था और गर्म भी इतना था कमरा कि कभी किसी
के पास बातें करने की शक्ति शेष न रहती। हरि भी चुप ही रहा।
वह चुप ही रहता यदि उसे सामने वाली घड़ी की दुकान का मालिक
दोस्ताना रवैये वाला न लगता । उस दुकान का नाम था, डिंज डौंग वर्क्स ।
जब हरि वहाँ पास में जूठा खाना/ कचरा आदि फेंकने आया तो उस दुकान
और मालिक शायद अली को देखा/जो हरि को देखकर मुस्कुराया। घड़ी
के दुकान मालिक ने प्यार से उससे बातें की। शहर में नये आये हो ? हरि
ने हाँ में जवाब दिया।

कहाँ से आये हो तुम? जग्गू के गाँव से ?
घड़ी मालिक ने पूछा/हरि ने कहा-नहीं थूल गाँव से । मुझे एक बिल्डिंग
का वॉचमैन यहाँ लेकर खाना खिलाने आया तो मैं यहाँ पर रह गया।
और बच्चों को तो यहाँ जग्गू लेकर आया था। बूढे घड़ीसाज-मालिक
ने लगातार अपनी घड़ी पर काम करते हुए हरि से बातें करना जारी रखा।
उसका रवैया दोस्ताना देखकर हरि का उत्साह बढ़ता गया-हाँ यह आदमी
मेरी कुछ मदद जरूर कर सकता है हरि सोचने लगा।
बूढा घड़ीसाज आगे बोला-और भी लोग जग्गू के पास काम माँगने आते
हैं। वे दो बच्चे जो तुम्हारे साथ काम कर रहे हैं उनके माता-पिता जब रेलवे
ट्रैक पार कर पानी भरने जा रहे थे, तो ट्रेन से कटकर मर गये। उनका
परिवार दूरगाँव से यहाँ शहर में काम के लिए आया था। माँ-बाप कट कर
मर गये तो रेलवे प्लेटफॉर्म पर वह दो लड़के अनाथ हो अकेले रह गये।
जग्गू उन्हें यहाँ काम पर लगा गया ।
हरि यह कहानी सुन काँप गया, उस भोजनालय के मालिक जग्गू के
यहाँ वह अनाथ बच्चे की तरह पलने-बढ़ने, काम करते जाने के ख्याल से
डर गया। फिर उसने उस बूढ़े घड़ी दुकान मालिक से कहा-काश मेरे पास
पैसे होते तो एक पोस्टकार्ड खरीदता ।

हा-हा- बूढ़ा घड़ीसाज हँसा-अचानक तुम्हें किसी को चिट्ठी लिखना
याद आ गया। जरूर लिखना चाहिए यदि कोई है तुम्हारा । सड़क के सीधे
सामने एक बिजली घर है वहाँ जाओ पर पैसे हैं पोस्टकार्ड खरीदने के लिए
तुम्हारे पास? कि दूँ तुम्हें पैसे ?
हरि ने कृतज्ञतापूर्वक उस घड़ीसाज से पैसा लिया। वादा किया कि जैसे
ही उसे जग्गू से पैसे मिलेंगे वह उसे लौटा देगी। उसने पोस्टकार्ड जाकर खरीद
तो लिया पर कलम भी तो चाहिए थी। वह वापस घड़ीसाज के पास आया ।
उससे कलम माँग वहीं सड़क के पास पक्की फर्श पर बैठकर चिट्ठी लिखने
लगा। भोजनालय का मालिक जग्गू उस समय कहीं बाहर गया था। दोनों
अनाथ लड़के सो रहे थे। उनके उठने के पहले यह चिट्ठी लिखने-छोड़ने का
काम हो जाएगा और किसी को पता न चलेगा कि उसने क्या किया। सोचा
हरि ने
फिर हरि ने अपनी माँ को चिट्ठी लिखी कि उसे बंबई में काम मिल
गया है। चिन्ता न करें और वह बराबर घर को पैसे भेजता रहेगा। पोस्टकार्ड
पर उसने अपने गाँव के घर का पता लिखा । प्रेषक के स्थान पर अपना
नाम तो बड़े अक्षरों में लिखा, पर नये शहर का अपना पता नहीं लिखा
पोस्टकार्ड पोस्टबॉक्स में डालने के बाद उसे खुशी हुई कि यह काम तो कर
दिया चुपचाप साथ ही एक डर भी समा गया उसके मन में-इसका मतलब
यह हुआ कि अब वह गाँव वापस नहीं जा रहा था, यहीं बंबई में रहना था
अब उसे।

Ans. The condition of the restaurant, Sri Krishna eating
house was very Pathetic. It was the meanest and shabbiest
restaurant that Hari had every seen. It did have even so much
as a coloured picture glud to the wall or perhaps there had
been one and had disappeared under grim and soot with
which walls were coated. The ceiling was thick with co-webs
that trapped the soot and made a kind of furry blanket over
one's head. The floor and the wooden tables were all black
since they got an even share of soot from the open stoves.

Eating House ? Why did they come to that particular
restaurant ?
Ans. The people that came to the restaurant were beggars
and coolies. The people came to this particular restaurant as it
was the cheapest restaurant anyone can find in Bombay.

out chapattis with the other two boys.
