बिफोर यू रीड-क्या तुम चीटियों को पसन्द करते हो ? संसार में
चीटियाँ सर्वाधिक सामान्य घरेलू कीटों में हैं जो रसोईघरों, स्नानघरों से
होकर पंक्तिबद्ध चलती हैं। लेकिन यदि तुम उन्हें गौर से देखोगे,
कतिपय जीवन संदेश मिलते हैं जो हम इन छोटे आकर्षक जीवों से सीख
सकते हैं।

बगीचे में बाहर 'मेरी' पॉकेट रूमाल सीने के लिए बैठ जाती है और
वहाँ एक छोटा कीट दौड़ता आता है-ओह, इतनी तेजी में ! उसके बगल
में छोटे पत्थर के मेज के पार । मेरी का सिलाई में मन नहीं लगा और
उसने सोचा कि चींटी के साथ आनन्द मनायें । उसने अपनी अंगुश्ताना से
चींटी को ढंक दिया। उसने कहा कि अब चींटी अंधेरे में है। क्या वह
समझ सकती है ? वह तो बिल्कुल छोटी चीज है।

मेरी को माँ ने बुलाया और वह दौड़कर चली गई, और भूल गई कि
उसने चींटी को अंगुश्ताना से ढ़क दी है। चींटी अंधेरे में कैद चक्कर
लगाती रही, दौड़ती रही मानो वह विशाल राही हो ।

ओह, यदि तुम तेज होते तो उसे यह कहते हुए सुनते-मैं बाहर नहीं
निकल सकता हूँ....मेरे दम छूट जायेंगे, मैं मर जाऊँगा। मेरी सोने चली
गई और रात में वर्षा हो गयी। सुबह होने पर जब रूमाल लाने गई तो
रूमाल तर-बतर था, मानों कोई बहुत रो रहा था। उसे याद आया कि
अंगुश्ताना के नीचे कौन है। मेरी ने कहा, मुझे विस्मय है कि वह क्या
कर रहा है। लेकिन जब उसने अंगुश्ताना हटाया तो छोटी चीज स्थिर और
गतिशून्य थी।
ओह, अंगुश्ताना के नीचे रहने के कारण वह क्या मर गयी? वह
जोर से बोली। मुझे भय है कि वह मर गयी है।

तुमने ऐसा क्यों किया, मेरी? उसके पिता ने कहा जो बगल में थे,

पिता ने कहा । मैं नहीं जानती मेरी धीरे से बोली। वह शर्मिन्दा महसूस
कर रही थी। "वह घर जाना चाहता है". पिता ने कहा, "मैं जानता हूँ
जहाँ वह रहता है, सेब के वृक्ष के नीचे।" ओह ! ऐसे छोटे चीज का
वास्तव में क्या अपना घर होता है? मेरी सोच है कि ये कहीं भी रह सकते
हैं, क्यों ऐसा वह पसंद नहीं करेगा। घर पर उसका सुन्दर राजमहल
गलिगारों और अनगिनत कमरों सहित होता है; वह और अन्य बनाते हैं
और साथ मिलजुलकर रहते हैं, जैसे एक छोटे शहर में लोग रहते हैं।
"क्या उसकी पत्नी और बच्चे होते हैं, बहुतेरे छोटे चींटियों के घर पर।"
"हो", उसके पिता ने जवाब दिया, बेबी चींटियाँ अण्डे के रूप में होती
हैं, असाहय होती हैं, उनका पोषण उनके बड़े सम्बन्धियों द्वारा होता हैं।
पिता चींटियाँ और माता चीटियाँ और अन्य नर्स चींटिया होती हैं। कोई भी
अपने बच्चे को नहीं जानते हैं लेकिन सभी बुजुर्ग चींटियाँ बेबी चींटियों के
प्रति दयालु होते हैं। यह नर्स चींटी है। देखों कितनी जल्दीवाजी करती है !

Ans. The nurse ants do clean their young ones by licking
them. On sunny days they carry their babies out, and let them
lie in the sun. On cold days they take them downstairs away
from the cold wind and rain.

Ans. The fours ants helped their friend on whom a berry
felled. Among the four two of them pushed the berry as hard as
they could while the other two pulled their friend out by the
hind legs and at last set him free.

Ans. Mary's father advised Mary not to be unkind to the
ant, who is kinder than her though he is only a tiny little thing.

Ans. No, she was not a kind girl, because she would not
